City Wide Food Drive returns to Fort Saskatchewan

Fort Saskatchewan residents may notice yellow bags being placed outside of their doors next week.

These yellow bags are for the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank’s City Wide Food Drive, an annual event that makes it easier than ever to donate.

“By Saturday morning we ask that you fill your bags with non-perishable food items and put it outside before 10 a.m., and our volunteers will pick it up,” said Kassandra Gartner, executive director of the Fort Sask Food Bank.

Items in high demand include soup, pork and beans, pasta, pasta sauce, sidekicks, jam, and peanut butter.

“Folks are really struggling with having enough and buying enough to keep their household fed,” added Gartner. “So far we are serving 21 per cent more people. We’re finding it’s tough for them to make their ends meet.”

Although this annual event helps the food bank during a difficult time of year, they accept donations all year round. You can donate to the food bank’s collection bins located inside Safeway, Freson Bros., and Co-op stores.

The food bank also accepts monetary donations, and even toy donations that they use for their annual Christmas Hamper Campaign.
