Premier Smith promises ‘hard number’ before pension plan referendum

Alberta United Conservative Premier Danielle Smith told reporters she will not hold a referendum over whether to leave the Canada Pension Plan in favour of an Alberta pension plan until voters have the facts.

“I’m not going to do a referendum if people don’t have the information that they need in order to make a decision,” Smith said, after remarks to an Edmonton Chamber of Commerce event held across the street from its own offices at the Edmonton Convention Centre on Jasper Avenue.

“We’re hearing from people. They want to know what the number will be,

“Albertans will have a hard number.” Smith said.

Meanwhile, Premier Smith will appear in Calgary today, to speak at the Alberta Climate Summit. Smith is scheduled to speak at 12:30 p.m. in a fireside chat format hosted by Dave Kelly, a television host, best known for his time on the Calgary edition of Breakfast Television and on the Dave Kelly Show. The sold out event bills itself as an event to bring, “Albertans together to lead the energy transformation.”

Topics are scheduled to focus upon how Alberta can acheive carbon net-zero, reshaping Alberta as a leader in the clean energy sector, and how to prepare a workforce to lead in a diversifying energy sector.
