Charges laid in deaths of EPS officers

A 19-year-old has been charged following an investigation into the deaths of two EPS officers.

On March 16, 2023, Constable Brett Ryan and Constable Travis Jordan were killed while responding to a domestic dispute at an apartment in the area of 132 Street and 114 Avenue.

Both officers were shot by a 16-year-old boy who then shot his own mother during a struggle for the gun before turning the gun on himself.

The 16-year-old shooter died from his injuries, while the mother survived.

A week after the shooting, police determined that the 16-year-old shooter was the same suspect involved in a shooting at an Edmonton Pizza Hut.

Officers began investigating into where the boy had gotten the firearm. After several months of extensive investigations, police determined that 19-year-old Dennis Okeymow was the one who provided the shooter with the gun.

On November 23, 2023, police executed a search warrant on Okeymow’s residence, vehicle, and cell phone. Okeymow was arrested, while police seizing a loaded handgun, ammunition, illegal drugs, and $10,000 in cash.

Okeymow has been charged with:

  • Manslaughter (x3)
  • Criminal negligence causing death (x3)
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm (x2)
  • Firearms trafficking
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition
  • Other drug trafficking related charges

“In my 20 years in this career, this is the most complex and tragic file I have worked on,” said Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart with EPS. “It’s heartbreaking that the trafficking of a firearm has led to multiple deaths and life-altering injuries.”

“The trauma suffered by the impacted families as a result of this one simple transaction is unthinkable.”
