Alberta’s police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, is investigating after the Edmonton Police Service says one of its officers shot a 19-year-old woman on Tuesday after 5:55 p.m.
In a news release, EPS said it was called to a home near 64 Avenue and 172 Street to respond to a family dispute between that 19-year-old and a pre-teen girl. Police say that once they got inside the home, a confrontation with the woman ensued.
Police say they used a conducted energy weapon – commonly referred to as a Taser – on the woman. One of the officers then shot her with a firearm.
Paramedics with EMS treated and transported the woman to the hospital, having sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
No officers were physically injured in the incident.
