Alberta NDP Leadership Race begins

The race to determine the new leader of the Alberta NDP has begun.

The race started on Monday morning after current leader Rachel Notley announced her plans to step down as leader back in January.

Candidates must register before March 15 with the new leader expected to be named on June 22, with voting up to current NDP members.

To vote in the race, you must purchase a membership before April 22. For candidates there is a spending limit of $500,000 with an entry fee of $60,000 to join the race.

So far former Alberta justice minister Kathleen Ganley has announced her run for NDP leader. Ganley has also served three terms as a Calgary MLA.

Other members expected to run in the race are former cabinet minister Sarah Hoffman, and Edmonton MLA David Shepherd.

To become a member and vote in the race, you can join through the Alberta NDP website here. Any Albertan over the age of 14 can become a member.
