Strathcona County making dog ID mandatory

Strathcona County is making some changes to its Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw.

Starting on April 1, dog owners in the county will no longer need to purchase an annual dog license. However, all dogs must now wear visible identification on a collar or harness.

These dog IDs must include the owner’s current phone number.

“Officers use collar identification as a first step in attempting to reunite dogs and owners,” said Tom Sutton with the RCMP. “While microchipping and social media can assist in locating owners in the absence of identification, responsible dog ownership remains essential in reunification and keeping dogs, people and other animals safe and well.

Other amendments in the bylaw include fines for failing to use a dog ID, while other offences like excessive barking and not picking up waste remains in effect.
