Why are there so many Winter Walks?

Winter Walks have been planned in cities all across the area, but where did they come from?

The Winter Walk was created by SHAPE, which provides encouragement and support to Alberta communities to include active travel in their day.

Although Winter Walk Day is officially held on February 7, several communities have decided to make it a regular event throughout the winter months.

In Strathcona County, there are several Winter Walks every week for people 55 and older. These walks are hosted at the Ardrossan Recreation Complex.

These Winter Walks cost two dollars and includes free coffee. You can see a full Winter Walk schedule here.

As for SHAPE, they’re held together by funding from the provincial government, Ever Active Schools, Alberta Blue Cross, and AMA.

You can read more about Winter Walk Day by visiting the SHAPE website here.
