Fort Saskatchewan man arrested in federal gun investigation

A Fort Saskatchewan man is facing 16 weapons charges following an investigation by the RCMP Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET).

On February 13, INSET executed a search warrant at a home and vehicle, which led to the seizure of two automatic rifles, a semi-automatic rifle, several handguns, a shotgun, 33 magazines, and four bayonets.

All of these weapons are either prohibited or non-restricted, which led to the suspect, 33-year-old Mark Peterson, being charged with:

  • Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized contrary to section 92(1) of the Criminal Code (x9);
  • Possession of prohibited weapon, device or ammunition knowing its possession is unauthorized contrary to section 92(2) of the Criminal Code (x2);
  • Weapons trafficking contrary to section 99(1) of the Criminal Code (x2);
  • Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition contrary to section 95(1) of the Criminal Code; and,
  • Unsafe storage contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code (x2).

Peterson appeared in an Edmonton court on Tuesday (Feb. 21), with the investigation done with help from the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team, and the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP.
