The City of St. Albert have released some statistics on their Idle Free Bylaw.
This bylaw was put in place back in 2007 and had a recent update in 2018. This bylaw prohibits vehicles from idling for more than three minutes.
The only exception to this bylaw was during times when it was warmer than 30 C or colder than -20 C. Anyone caught breaking the bylaw could be ticketed $100.
According to city statistics, there were 193 incidents related to the bylaw since 2015. Of those incidents, 108 were resolved through warnings, 78 were considered unsubstantiated, and only six ended with tickets being issued.
The Idle Free Bylaw serves not as a measure of enforcement, but rather as an educational tool, according St. Albert’s environment manager Meghan Myers.
As of 2024, city administration have not identified any changes that would need to be made to the existing bylaw.
