Elk Island Public School students take part in literary March Madness tournament

Taking inspiration from the iconic March Madness basketball tournament, students all across the area will be taking part in a tournament of their own.

Throughout the entire month Elk Island Public Schools are hosting March Book Madness, a competition which puts students’ favourite books against each other in a bracket-style tournament.

“March Book Madness is an exciting and collaborative challenge,” said Hana Musama, a Grade 12 student at Vegreville Composite High. “I believe that it gives students curiosity about the books and motivates them to keep reading. Literacy is highly important and beneficial for students, especially for young adults like me who are applying for scholarships. This challenge is highly recommended to make literacy learning more fun.”

There are 16 books in the tournament, with titles ranging from the Percy Jackson series to the works of John Green. In each bracket there will be two books that are voted on with a majority ruling pushing the winning book forward.

Not only will students be reading these books but they’ll discuss the characters, plots, and why one book should win over the other.

Schools participating in March Book Madness include Fort Saskatchewan Elementary, Fort High, James Mowat, Glen Allan Elementary, Bruderheim School, and many more.
