The City of Edmonton has announced that city hall has entered its last phase of re-opening.
In a release sent out on Wednesday, the city confirmed that city hall would be open to the public again starting on March 25.
“City Hall is a vibrant gathering place for civic participation, celebration and commemoration,” said city manager Andre Corbould. “I am confident that we have achieved the appropriate balance of a safe and secure environment that is also open and welcoming.”
There will be some new security measures put in place, such as members of the public needing to enter through a dedicated access point and undergo security screening before entering the city room.
On top of this, all city of Edmonton staff and media must wear visible identification while inside city hall. Stairwells will also be locked, and only used for emergencies.
City Hall originally closed down in late January following a shooting, where a suspect with a gun and firebombs stormed the building before firing off shots and throwing Molotov cocktails.
Nobody was injured during the shooting, with the suspect still in custody as he awaits his trial.
