RCMP: New Scam Targetting Drivers

A new scam is circulating the country, according to a release from the RCMP.

This scam targets drivers through text messages claiming that the victim’s vehicle was caught speeding. This text will also include a link to a website where the victim is told they can pay for their ticket.

However, no government or law agency issues tickets through text. Police are telling people who receive these texts to not click any links sent by these numbers, as these texts are scams.

“If you are unsure if a message or phone call is fraudulent, RCMP encourage you to contact the person, business, or organization to confirm,” the Red Deer RCMP wrote in a release.

If you find yourself to be a victim of fraud, you can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre through the phone at 1-888-495-8501, or on their website.
