St. Albert police officers and firefighters were on the scene of a vehicle fire on Wednesday evening.
Several St. Albert residents took to social media posting images of a large funnel of black smoke rising to the sky. This smoke is believed to have been caused by the blaze.
In a video posted to the YEGWAVE Twitter account, it shows a white car engulfed in flames after apparently colliding with an electrical transformer box.

It’s reported that the car hit an electrical box, which started the fire. Unclear why and how that happened at the moment, but the road is currently closed with firefighters, EMS, and RCMP present. #YEGWAVE pic.twitter.com/MYMXjOeHr1
The situation was confirmed by Radioyeg – Scanner Radio, which posts live updates on Edmonton’s emergency services, in a post also made to Twitter.

Although St. Albert police have not released an official statement, a post made to the St. Albert Firefighters Facebook page gave more information on the situation.
“Crews had to take extra precautions due to the transformer having a large amount of energy. Thankfully the driver was able to exit prior to the fire moving to the van,” wrote the post, mentioning that fire crews were aided by Fortis Alberta.
