Province believes all 2024 wildfires caused by humans

In Alberta’s weekly wildfire update, they mentioned that they believe all wildfires in the province right now were caused by humans.

There are currently 63 wildfires burning throughoug the province, with over 170 fires already extinguished this year alone.

Because of this, the province is asking that residents take steps to prevent wildfires, such as obeying local fire bans and restrictions.

For example, Lamont County recently issued a fire ban, which means that all off-highway vehicles, meaning dirt bikes and quads, are now prohibited.

Humans can cause fires in many ways, from throwing cigarette butts out of windows, to leaving dry leaves and needles in gutters. According to officials, the dry and windy conditions are leading to a high risk of wildfires.

“I urge you to assess your property for wildfire danger and take any preventive action you can to address these risks,” said Todd Loewen, minister for forestry and parks, during the update. “This includes breaking up fuel sources that could ignite a structure.”

You can keep updated by all the fire advisories, bans, and restrictions in the area by visiting the Alberta Fire Bans website.

Right now, there are fire advisories in Fort Saskatchewan and Morinville, fire restrictions in Sturgeon County and Strathcona County, and a fire ban in Lamont County.
