Alberta Health Services (AHS) have issued a measles alert in Edmonton earlier this week.
A case was confirmed in the city on Wednesday, with AHS saying that people who attended the following places may have been exposed to the disease:
- Edmonton International Airport international between 3:20 p.m. and 6 p.m. on April 16.
- Stollery Children’s Hospital between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. on April 20, and 4:40 a.m. to 9:33 a.m. on April 23.
- 66th Medical Clinic between 12:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on April 22.
People born after 1970 with less than two measles vaccines are at a higher risk of developing the disease, with the greatest risk of development posed on pregnant women, infants, and those with weakened immune systems.
Measles is a contagious disease which leads to symptoms such as fever, cough, red rashes, and a runny nose. Children in Alberta are able to receive measles shots at 12 months old, and at 18 months old.
Those who have developing measles symptoms are being asked to stay home and to phone 811.
