Warrant issued for alleged “Project Gaslight” shooter

Edmonton police have issued a Canada-wide warrant for a man accused of three drive by shootings in connection to an ongoing extortion series.

On December 21, there were reports of a shooting at a home in the Cy Becker neighbourhood in Edmonton. Shots were fires in an upstairs window, with there being two children in the home at the time of the shooting.

A few days later there were reports of a shooting at a home in Winnipeg, with the shooting captured on CCTV footage. The suspect vehicle is a black SUV with no front license plate.

In both of these shootings, the homeowner was extorted for money and threatened. Police reported that there were no injuries in either shooting.

On December 29, shots were fired at a home in Sherwood Park, with one bullet even hitting a toybox in a children’s playroom. This homeowner was not threatened before the shooting, with police believing that the shooter targetted the wrong house.

Police determined through ballistic data that all the shootings involved the same gun. This had led to a warrant being issued for the arrest of 19-year-old Arjun Sahnan, who police believe is responsible.

Investigators have determined that Sahnan fled to India on a flight that he booked before committing the shootings.

“Our Firearms Investigation Unit is a sophisticated team with the resources to investigate these complex files, regardless of where the offences take place,” said Eric Stewart with EPS. “Committing gun crime in other provinces and fleeing the country will not prevent us from charging a suspect and holding them accountable.”

Police are now looking for any information on Sahnan’s whereabouts while also looking to identify a second suspect in the Winnipeg shooting.

Anyone with information can get in touch with the Project Gaslight police force by calling 780-391-4279, or by sending an e-mail to projectgaslight@edmontonpolice.ca.
