Fort Saskatchewan’s second annual Flag-A-Thon is going underway in June, with the Fort Saskatchewan Minor Football Association (FSMFA) still looking for players and donations.
The flag-a-thon is a 24-hour football marathon, which raises funds for the Stollery Children’s Foundation. Last year the event raised around $18,000. The event also features caricature artists and face painters.
To raise funding, the FSMFA will be hosting a community barbecue at the Freson Bros. parking lot on May 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“The money that we will make will go towards sponsoring our event and covering some of our costs,” said Melanie Thorson, communications director with the association. “This is the first barbecue we’ve ever done.”
It’s expected to cost around $4,000 to host the event, with the association hoping they can cover the cost through sponsorships and donations, so that they can donate as much to the Stollery as possible.
“It’s a lot of fun to give back to the community and to teach to our kids and players that this is a good thing to do,” added Thorson.
The flag-a-thon is still looking for players as well, with players of all ages and skill levels able to join. The minimum team size is five people, and the maximum team size is 10 people.
The Sunday after May long weekend, the association will also be putting on a bottle drive to help fund for equipment, training, and field costs. There will also be more fundraising events set up in the fall.
