Kicker takes umbrage with CFL’s new game balls

A heads-up for Elks kicker Boris Bede: one game into the 2024 season, and on the eve of the Elks season opener, the CFL has a kicking controversy to deal with.

Winnipeg kicker Sergio Castillo took issue with the league’s chipped footballs Thursday night following the Bombers’ season-opening home loss to the Montreal Alouettes.

Castillo missed two of the three field goals he attempted in the game, along with a convert.

The league has inserted microchips into its footballs to help generate real-time advanced statistics, any many kickers say the chips negatively impact kicking accuracy.

The Elks open their CFL season on June 8 at 2pm versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Get tickets at goelks.com.
