Sturgeon Spirits triumphant in first annual Red and Black Bowl

The Sturgeon Spirits were victorious over the Jasper Place Rebels in the first ever Red and Black Bowl on June 8, 12-0.

The wet and rainy conditions at Larry Olexiuk Field in St. Albert on Saturday couldn’t stop the Sturgeon offense on the way to victory.

The Red and Black Bowl is a competitive and developmental experience for nearly 150 student-athletes from Sturgeon Composite and Jasper Place high schools.  The game saw each side’s junior team pitted against each other in the first half, with the senior squads taking over for the second half.

The Spirits were led to victory by slotback Lucus Brown’s first half touchdown and 75 yards of offense.  In the second half, Sturgeon quarterback Kale Large connected with Tanner McBride on a 77 yard pass and run for the lone score of the half.  Linebackers Jace Walsh and Andrew Kozely, along with captains James Morrison and Steele Doronski, led a stingy defense in preserving the shutout.

Sturgeon’s spring training camp wraps up June 15 and 16 with a jamboree in Stettler.  Fall training camp begins August 16.
