Louisiana has enacted a mandate requiring every public school classroom, from kindergarten through state-funded universities, to display the Ten Amendments.
According to the new regulation, the amendments must be presented in a poster-sized format with large, easily readable fonts. Proponents say that it is not only for religious reasons, and that there is historical significance of these foundational documents. However, critics have voiced concerns about potential legal challenges that could arise.
“Even among those who may believe in some version of the Ten Commandments, the particular text that they adhere to can differ by religious denomination or tradition. The government should not be taking sides in this theological debate,” – American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation
The implementation of this mandate is expected to draw significant attention and debate as it unfolds in Louisiana’s educational institutions.
