WestJet cancels flights ahead of possible mechanics strike

About 40 WestJet flights have been cancelled in anticipation of a possible strike by hundreds of its aircraft maintenance workers Thursday night.

The Calgary-based airline says roughly 6500 travellers have been affected by the decision to cancel and consolidate its flights in order to park aircraft safely.

The union representing some 670 WestJet mechanics served the airline with a strike notice earlier this week.

WestJet is waiting for a response to its request that the Canadian Industrial Relations Board intervene, which the company says would prevent labour action by both sides. (The Canadian Press)
