WestJet, mechanics sign tentative deal; resuming flight schedule will take time

WestJet passengers aren’t out of the woods yet, with further flight disruptions expected despite a strike-ending deal between the airline and its mechanics.

WestJet says the full resumption of normal operations will take time, cancelling 76 flights along with 71 delays according to tracking service FlightAware.

On Friday evening, some 680 members of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association had walked off the job despite a directive for binding arbitration from federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan.  The directive, however, did not change that the union was still in a legal strike position.

WestJet says further cancellations will still be required over the coming days, as its aircraft are parked at 13 airports across Canada and in several cases the crews need to be transported to the aircraft for retrieval.
