Cenovus Energy demobilizing staff in response to wildfire in the area

Cenovus Energy announced yesterday that they are demobilizing some staff at their Sunrise oilsands project in northern Alberta as a precautionary measure in response to the evolving wildfire situation in the area.

Located approximately 60 kilometers from Fort McMurray, the Sunrise project has a production capacity of nearly 50,000 barrels per day.

Cenovus stated that operations at the site are unaffected but they are removing non-essential staff from the area.

Last week, Suncor had to shut down their Firebag site and reduce production due to the wildfires.

As of July 9 at 4:47pm, Alberta is dealing with 61 active wildfires, with 13 of them classified as out of control.
