EPS work with tech companies to employ people with autism to look through body cam footage

Edmonton police are collaborating with technology companies to employ workers with autism for reviewing body camera footage. This initiative comes after Alberta mandated the use of body cameras for police officers last year.

The footage from these cameras needs to undergo redaction to ensure privacy protections, which can be a long process. It involves thoroughly examining hours of audio and video content to address potential privacy concerns, such as license plate numbers of unrelated vehicles or images of children, which may require blurring.

Authorities highlighted that the task of bodycam redaction demands a high level of attention to detail and concentrated focus to effectively safeguard personal privacy within law enforcement practices.

“We achieve nearly 100 per cent accuracy,” Ling Huang, President and CEO of Technology North Corporation, father of Brian Huang, who is on the autism spectrum.
