Flames reached Jasper townsite

The evacuation of 25,000 people from Jasper National Park proved crucial as flames reached the Jasper townsite last evening, impacting multiple buildings, confirmed by Parks Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced federal military assistance in response to the wildfires ravaging the province. Fanned by strong winds, the fire escalated into a firestorm, reaching heights of 300 to 400 feet. The blaze has already claimed numerous buildings, including the renowned Maleen Lodge.

As conditions worsened, some first responders were forced to retreat from the intensifying situation.

A helping hand

The City of Edmonton is mobilizing its Fire Rescue Services to aid efforts in Jasper amid escalating wildfires.

Edmonton will deploy two Type 1 engines, each staffed by four personnel, along with an aerial apparatus staffed by four, a Tahoe vehicle with a District Chief, a service truck with a mechanic, and a pickup trailer stocked with spare equipment, logistics supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE), and cots for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) members. Additionally, the city is providing 50 cots for Emergency Social Services.

Edmonton is welcoming evacuees to Kennedale site ensuring they receive immediate necessities.
