Royal Alberta Museum to be turned into greenspace, public feedback wanted

The provincial government has announced that the former Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton will be demolished to make way for a new greenspace. The decision comes as part of a plan to revitalize the area, with public feedback being actively sought.

Albertans are encouraged to participate in a survey posted on the Government of Alberta’s website to provide input on the design and features of the new greenspace. The survey will be open until August 30th.

The estimated cost of demolishing the existing building ranges from $22 million to $48 million. In comparison, repurposing the structure was projected to cost at least $150 million.

Officials said Alberta Infrastructure currently takes over $700,000 in operating and maintenance costs annually for the empty building.

The government said Alberta Infrastructure is also consulting with Indigenous communities on the plan.
