Strathcona County RCMP warn of a new cellphone scam going around

trathcona County RCMP are alerting residents to a new cell phone scam targeting the area.

On July 18th, a victim received a call from someone claiming to be from Telus, offering a promotional deal that included two new phones and a plan for $65 per month. The caller instructed the victim to order the phones at a higher price from Telus, promising to adjust the price to reflect the promotion once the order was placed.

Following the call, the victim received two phones in the mail, which the scammer claimed were the “wrong phones.” The victim was then directed to mail the phones back to an address in Ontario using a provided shipping label. Unfortunately, the phones were sent to the scammer rather than being returned to Telus.

Strathcona County RCMP are advising residents to report any suspicious phishing calls received on Telus mobile devices or landlines. If you suspect you have been targeted by a scam, contact Telus customer care immediately.

Scam calls can be reported to the RCMP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre through their website.
