Argonauts QB Chad Kelly Reinstated by CFL, Returns to Practice After Suspension for Policy Violation

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly returned to practice Sunday after being reinstated by the CFL following a suspension. The league had suspended Kelly on May 7 for violating its gender-based violence policy, sidelining him for Toronto’s two exhibition games and at least the first nine regular-season contests.

The CFL announced Kelly’s reinstatement under a “last-chance agreement” with confidential conditions. Kelly’s suspension followed an independent investigation into a sexual harassment lawsuit against him and the Argonauts, which was settled in June.

“This is an important step for Chad, who has taken full accountability for his actions,” said Argos general manager Mike Clemons. He added that Kelly’s return marks the beginning of an ongoing commitment to self-improvement.

Kelly, 30, took 70% of the first-team snaps in practice, but head coach Ryan Dinwiddie expressed caution about whether he would start Thursday’s game against Saskatchewan. Kelly has not played since Toronto’s East Division final loss to Montreal last year.

Kelly apologized in a statement, acknowledging his actions and the impact on others. “I am committed to doing what is needed to be a better teammate, colleague, and person,” he said.

Toronto, now 5-4, will decide soon whether Kelly will take the field as they face the Roughriders this week.
