Oilers Trade Cody Ceci to Sharks, Add Ty Emberson and Vasily Podkolzin Amid Salary-Cap Pressure

The Edmonton Oilers made two significant moves on Sunday, trading defenseman Cody Ceci and a third-round pick in 2025 to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Ty Emberson. Ceci, 30, had five goals and 20 assists in 79 games last season and contributed two goals and three assists in 24 playoff games. With one year left on his $3.25 million contract, Ceci’s departure helps Edmonton navigate their tight salary-cap situation.

The 24-year-old Emberson brings youth and potential to the Oilers’ blue line after recording a goal and nine assists in 30 games with the Sharks last season.

In a separate deal, Edmonton also acquired Russian winger Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks for Ottawa’s fourth-round pick in 2025. Podkolzin, 23, had two assists in 19 regular-season games and appeared in two playoff games for Vancouver.

These moves come as the Oilers face pressure following offer sheets from the St. Louis Blues to restricted free agents Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Broberg received a two-year, $4.58 million-per-season offer, while Holloway was offered a two-year deal worth $2.29 million annually. The Oilers have seven days to match or will receive draft picks as compensation.
