Blue Jackets Star Johnny Gaudreau and Brother Matthew Killed in Tragic Cycling Accident

The hockey world is reeling after the tragic deaths of Columbus Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, in a cycling accident in New Jersey. The Gaudreau brothers, both in their early 30s, were struck by a suspected drunk driver on Thursday night, just hours before they were to attend their sister’s wedding as groomsmen.

The accident occurred at 8:19 p.m. in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. According to state police, the driver of an SUV, who was attempting to pass another vehicle, struck the brothers, causing fatal injuries at the scene. The driver has been charged with two counts of death by auto.

Johnny Gaudreau, 31, was an All-Star forward known for his electrifying style of play and his ability to thrill fans across the NHL. He was a beloved figure both on and off the ice, having spent nine seasons with the Calgary Flames before joining the Blue Jackets in 2022. His brother Matthew, 29, was also a talented hockey player, following in Johnny’s footsteps at Boston College and later playing professionally in the AHL and ECHL.

The Blue Jackets issued a statement expressing their shock and devastation over the loss. “Johnny played the game with great joy, which was felt by everyone who saw him on the ice,” the team said. “We will miss him terribly and do everything we can to support his family and each other through this tragedy.”

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also expressed his condolences, highlighting Johnny’s infectious spirit and the profound impact he had on the sport.

The Gaudreau family, who had planned to celebrate a wedding this weekend, now faces an unimaginable tragedy. The hockey community mourns alongside them, remembering Johnny and Matthew not only as exceptional athletes but as cherished members of their family and community.
