Word’s longest baseball game happened in Sherwood Park

The opening ceremonies for the inaugural game at Saiker’s Acres, featuring a newly built replica of the 1923 Yankees’ Stadium, were at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 29.

The event, designed for all ages, will spanned over the weekend and included live music, hot dog vendors, and extensive baseball action. The highlight of the weekend was the diamond itself, which is now the largest baseball diamond in North America. The field features replicas of Major League Baseball landmarks, including Fenway Park’s Green Monster and Pesky’s Pole, Wrigley Field’s brick wall, and a cornfield inspired by Field of Dreams.

The game will involve 56 players across three teams, and ran until Monday, September 2. Players participated in shifts lasting four to six hours, with two to three hours of rest in between. Participants ate and slept onsite, with no substitutions allowed. Players who left the site for any reason will not be permitted to return. Despite these conditions, the players, were deeply committed to the cause.

The marathon game aims to raise funds for the purchase and installation of an MR-Sim (magnetic resonance simulator) machine at the Cross Cancer Institute. This state-of-the-art equipment will enable doctors to capture high-resolution images of cancerous areas, improving the visualization and targeting of tumour treatments.
