Conservatives will not get backing from NDP or Bloc for the non-confidence motion

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has announced that he will not support the Conservative Party’s non-confidence motion scheduled for next week. This declaration, coupled with indications from Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet that his party will also vote against the Conservative motion, effectively reduces the likelihood of an early federal election.

“New Democrats came to Ottawa to get stuff done, to work for people to fight for people, not to play Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative games. So we will not be supporting Pierre Poilievre’s motion,” Singh told reporters outside the House of Commons on Thursday.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre plans to present the motion for debate on September 24 and has specifically challenged Singh to support it. However, Blanchet has characterized the Conservative motion as an attempt to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with Poilievre.

While Blanchet has previously expressed a willingness to collaborate with the Liberals on confidence motions, he has laid out certain conditions. The Conservatives currently lack sufficient support to pass the motion with just one of either the Bloc or the NDP on their side.
