Liberals survive the first confidence vote

Today, Members of Parliament voted on a motion that could have brought down the minority Liberal government. The motion was ultimately shut down as the NDP, Bloc Québécois, and Green Party sided with the Liberals, defeating it 211-120.

On Tuesday evening, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre introduced two additional non-confidence motions aimed at applying pressure by highlighting criticisms from other opposition leaders and addressing key issues such as housing, crime, and food costs.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet indicated they are not yet ready to force Canadians into an early election, which polling suggests the Conservatives would likely win.

A new motion is set to be introduced shortly, with the Liberals advancing a second motion deemed a matter of confidence. They plan to call a vote on a “Ways and Means Motion,” which essentially grants the government approval to table a spending bill connected to post-consultation changes to the capital gains policy.

This one, is tied to the Liberals’ last budget and its mainly a bill about collecting and spending Canadian’s money.

The vote is expected to be after 3 pm MT

A non-confidence motion is essentially a way for MPs to express their lack of support for the current government or its leader.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
