5 year-old dies after canoe capsized on Wabamun Lake on Sunday afternoon PLUS UPDATE

A five-year-old girl has died after a canoe capsized near Moonlight Bay on Wabamun Lake Sunday afternoon, according to RCMP.

Emergency crews were called to the lake around 2:50 p.m. The girl was pulled from the water by bystanders before crews arrived, but despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead.

A 35-year-old woman who was also in the canoe was rescued by another watercraft. RCMP have not released any details on her condition.

The incident is under investigation, and the chief medical examiner has been contacted.

RCMP did not confirm if either the girl or the woman were wearing life jackets, noting it is part of the ongoing investigation.

Update:

Parkland RCMP are investigating the death of a five-year-old child in Wabamun Lake on October 13 as a criminal incident.

Police have now determined that the watercraft involved did not capsize, and the investigation remains ongoing.
