Alberta invests in turning industrial waste into energy

The Alberta government is launching two new initiatives to help industries cut emissions, save money, and turn waste into energy.

In partnership with Lafarge Canada, the province will run a pilot project to recycle used tires into fuel. The government is also investing $10 million to help industrial companies lower their energy bills through upgrades and training.

“We’re investing in cleaner fuels and new technology to ensure Alberta remains a leader in reducing emissions and turning waste into energy,” said Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz.

Tire Recycling Pilot Project

The new Tire-Derived Fuel (TDF) pilot project, led by the Alberta Recycling Management Authority, will turn 1.5 million old tires into fuel for industrial use. Lafarge Canada’s Low-Carbon Fuel Facility will participate, using the fuel to reduce its reliance on natural gas. Results from the pilot will help determine if tire fuel should be added to the province’s tire recycling program.

Energy Savings Program for Industry

Starting Oct. 17, industrial and manufacturing companies can apply for funding through the new Strategic Energy Management for Industry program. The $10 million program will help businesses cut energy costs by offering energy assessments, equipment upgrades, and training. Eligible sectors include agriculture, oil and gas, forestry, and more.

Lafarge’s Low-Carbon Fuel Facility

Lafarge’s new facility, funded in part by the province, will replace 50 per cent of its natural gas use with fuel made from construction waste, keeping 120,000 tonnes of waste out of landfills and cutting emissions by 30,000 tonnes annually.

More details on the energy program will be available on the Emissions Reduction Alberta website.
