U.S. investigating Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ system after crashes in low visibility

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a new investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system following reports of crashes in low visibility conditions, including one incident that resulted in a pedestrian’s death.

The NHTSA is examining approximately 2.4 million Tesla vehicles from the 2016 through 2024 model years. The probe follows another reported crash involving a Tesla, which led to an injury.

Tesla has consistently stated that its Full Self-Driving system is not autonomous and that human drivers must remain alert and ready to take control at any moment.

The investigation comes just days after Tesla unveiled a fully autonomous robo-taxi concept, which notably lacks a steering wheel and pedals. CEO Elon Musk announced plans to have these vehicles on the road by 2026.
