BILD Alberta warns residents about fake inspection letter

The Building Industry and Land Development Association Alberta or BILD Alberta is warning residents in Edmonton and Calgary about a scam involving fraudulent letters falsely claiming homes need to be inspected for hazardous insulation.

Several homeowners have received letters impersonating the Building Industry and Land Development Association, stating their properties may contain urea-formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI), a material banned in Canada in 1980. UFFI was commonly used in the 1970s for insulating and retrofitting industrial, commercial, and older residential buildings, but was later found to release gases that could pose cancer risks.

The letters urge homeowners to call a phone number immediately and warn that failure to comply with the so-called “mandatory inspection” could lead to legal action and impact their ability to sell or insure their homes.

BILD Alberta advises anyone receiving these letters to disregard the claims and contact the association directly to verify any legitimate concerns.
