Morinville RCMP investigate fatal collision in Sturgeon County

Morinville RCMP are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in Sturgeon County yesterday evening. At approximately 7:12 PM, police received a report of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 44 and Township Road 554.

Following the initial collision, a second crash took place at the same location. Emergency crews arrived to tend to multiple individuals involved. Tragically, two men from Westlock County—a 65-year-old male driver and a 70-year-old male passenger in a pickup truck—were pronounced deceased at the scene.

RCMP remained on-site for several hours to investigate the incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a van driven by a 17-year-old female was crossing Highway 44 from Township Road 544 when it was struck by the oncoming pickup truck. The impact caused the van to enter a nearby ditch, while the pickup truck remained on the highway. Shortly thereafter, the pickup, still occupied by the driver and passenger, was hit by an oncoming semi-tractor trailer.

Both drivers of the van and the semi-tractor trailer were treated by EMS and are expected to recover.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this collision is ongoing.
