RCMP warn Albertans about online shopping scams

Alberta RCMP are reminding residents to stay safe while shopping online, especially during the holiday season when reports of fraud tend to spike.

2023 RCMP Fraud Stats:

  • 51 cases of unauthorized credit card use.
  • Over 8,700 fraud cases involving amounts greater or less than $5,000.
  • 51 cases of cybercrime, like viruses and malware.

Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Shop from trusted websites—don’t fall for deals that seem too good to be true.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi for transactions or banking.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication and use strong passwords.
  • Watch out for phishing emails asking you to click links or share personal info. Verify by contacting the company directly.
  • Check your bank accounts regularly for suspicious charges.

By staying alert and following these tips, you can protect yourself from fraud and enjoy a safe holiday shopping season.
