WestJet passengers can claim baggage fee settlement

Travellers who paid fees for their first checked bag on certain WestJet flights between 2014 and 2019 can now claim part of a $12.5-million class-action settlement.

Key Information:

  • Who Can Claim:
    • Domestic flights: Booked between Oct. 29, 2014, and July 29, 2017.
    • International flights: Booked between Jan. 6, 2016, and Feb. 27, 2019.
  • Deadline: Submit claims by Feb. 10, 2025.
  • Settlement Details:
    • Compensation will be given as WestJet travel credits, valid for two years.
    • Legal fees and other costs will be deducted from the settlement.

The lawsuit, approved by the B.C. Supreme Court, claimed WestJet improperly charged passengers for their first checked bag despite rules stating it should have been free.
