Trudeau to Announce Temporary GST Relief on Essentials

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to unveil a temporary GST break on essential items today as part of a broader affordability package worth billions.

The measure, which aims to address the mounting cost-of-living pressures faced by Canadians, will focus on specific essentials such as groceries and home heating. While details remain scarce, the announcement is seen as a response to ongoing demands from the NDP.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has been vocal about his push for a permanent GST exemption on necessities, including food and heating. Singh confirmed that his party would back the proposed GST break, signaling a potential thaw in the parliamentary gridlock that has plagued recent legislative efforts.

The announcement comes amid growing criticism of the government’s handling of economic challenges, with Trudeau facing pressure from opposition parties and advocacy groups to deliver tangible relief for struggling households.

The highly unpopular Carbon Tax, however, remains unchanged.
