Due to a shortage of obstetrician-gynaecologists, rural and urban areas around Alberta are more at-risk for birthing premature babies and babies with ongoing health issues. Many expectant mothers can’t access specific services because less and less doctors are specializing in the overwhelming practise.
The head of obstetrics and gynecology at the Alberta Medical Association, Dr. Cameron Sklar, said some women have come to his office in their third trimester with major medical conditions because of a lack of checkups. He says delays in seeing a doctor adds lots of stress and puts mothers and children at-risk for health complications.
