Massive golf star is an Oilers fan

Paul Bissonnette and Keith Yandle ran into four-time majors champion Rory McIlroy playing golf. While chatting with them, McIlroy mentioned how he was a massive Oilers fan. Yandle talked about the interaction on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, stating that McIlroy got into the Oilers last year during playoffs. The co-host and former Oilers defenceman Ryan Whitney’s face lit up when he heard it. Although Whitney’s time on the team was short-lived, he has become a big fan of the Oilers in his retirement.

Whitney took the conversation a step further, stating on the episode “God, I want him [McIlroy] to get the Masters, now he needs to get the Masters. If he gets the Masters, you know that means the Oilers are winning the Stanley Cup.”

Despite his 122 weeks ranked as top golfer, two PGA Championships, and one USA Open win, McIlroy has not yet been able to claim the Masters’ green jacket; although he came close in 2022 coming in second place. His next chance to win the notorious jacket is rapidly approaching in April, then hopefully the Oilers can bring home the Stanley Cup in June.
