Police hit owner and driver who struck 34 Street overpass with nearly $40,000 in fines

A “professional” driver piloting a semi-truck carrying an excavator that struck the underside of the 34 Street overpass over the Sherwood Park Freeway early Tuesday morning is going to have a sore wallet, as is the owner of the truck.

Strathcona County RCMP issued 5 tickets requiring a court appearance to the driver under Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulations.

Edmonton Police Service’s Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit added 13 tickets totalling nearly $25,000 to the driver. A further ticket was issued to the driver for causing damage to the roadway.

The company that owns the vehicle was issued nine tickets totalling more than $13,000.

These types of tickets can include a mandatory court summons and a possible fine equivalent to the repair costs for the damaged infrastructure. Ouch.

Measure once and cut twice indeed.
