A vital resource for vulnerable Albertans is in danger of shutting its doors. The Fort Foundation Community Legal Justice Hub, which provides legal navigation, housing advocacy, family law support, and supervised visits, may be forced to close its physical space by the end of April due to a lack of sustainable funding. Without emergency financial support, the hub will transition to a remote outreach program, limiting its ability to provide in-person assistance to those in need.
The hub was built from personal experience. Its founder, Sarah Spence, who faced her own struggles with immigration, divorce, housing instability, and legal challenges, invested her life savings to create a support system that didn’t exist when she needed it most. Today, the hub serves over 60 clients a month, offering real-time support, a warm space, and wraparound care to help people navigate difficult times.
To raise the necessary funds, the organization is hosting a Pop-Up Market Fundraiser and is urgently seeking community support. Donations of raffle items, services, and sponsorships for the Legal Navigation Program are needed, along with emergency funding to cover April rent. The hub is also asking for increased awareness and engagement to keep its services running. To donate, or help in another way, you can reach out to Sarah at sarah@fortfoundation.ca.
If the goal isn’t met by April 1, the physical hub will close, but efforts will continue in some capacity. The organization remains determined to serve the community, whether in person or remotely. Those interested in contributing can reach out to the Fort Foundation to help keep this vital service alive.
