A fast-moving wildfire east of Elk Island National Park has forced evacuations, destroyed buildings at a historic site, and shut down a major highway as emergency crews battle to contain the blaze.
The fire, first reported around 5:30 p.m. on April 18, broke out behind the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village and has since spread rapidly due to dry conditions and strong winds. Fort Saskatchewan RCMP have confirmed the fire has reached structures within the heritage site, though the full extent of the damage remains unknown.

Evacuations are now underway for residents along Range Road 195, north of Highway 16. Those living nearby are being urged to prepare an evacuation kit and be ready to leave on short notice, as the evacuation zone could expand.
Highway 16 has been closed in both directions between the entrance to Elk Island National Park and Range Road 194. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes until further notice.
RCMP and fire crews remain on the scene, monitoring the evolving situation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available or when the highway reopens.
Authorities are asking the public to stay alert, obey all emergency orders, and avoid the area to allow first responders to work safely.
