Fort Saskatchewan Firefighters Win National Honour for Fundraising Efforts

The Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department and IAFF Local 5277 have received national recognition from Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC) for achieving the largest year-over-year fundraising increase among participating fire services across the country.

The award, which highlights exceptional fundraising growth, will be presented at the MDC Conference and Awards Ceremony in Richmond, B.C., on May 24, 2025. Two local firefighters will attend to accept the honour on behalf of the team.

“This achievement really speaks to the heart of the community—its generosity, dedication, and willingness to step up for a great cause,” said Andy Hansen, President of IAFF Local 5277. “Supporting families affected by neuromuscular disorders is something that’s deeply important to us.”

In 2024, the department organized several creative events to raise funds, most notably a rooftop camp-out held in November atop the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Hall. The event attracted strong community support and helped push the total well past previous years.

For over 70 years, firefighters across Canada have partnered with Muscular Dystrophy Canada to raise funds and awareness for people living with neuromuscular disorders. The Fort Saskatchewan team’s success underscores the strength of that tradition and the ongoing impact of local efforts.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada works to improve the lives of those affected by neuromuscular conditions and funds research toward potential cures. The organization praised the Fort Saskatchewan firefighters for their dedication and innovation in fundraising.

This recognition not only honours the firefighters’ commitment but also shines a light on the generosity of the Fort Saskatchewan community, which continues to rally behind a meaningful cause.
