Local landowners worried about flooding, drought, and wildfire risks are invited to a public open house on May 10 aimed at helping them find funding and support for environmental conservation on their property.
Hosted by the Beaver Hills Watershed Stewardship Society, the open house runs from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Birch Bay Ranch. The event will highlight funding programs available for both small and large landowners interested in restoring natural habitats and improving watershed health.
Representatives from programs like Green Acreages and the Rural Residential Stewardship Program will be on hand to explain how small acreage and recreational landowners can access financial support and guidance for conservation projects. ALUS (Alternative Land Use Services) will also be present, offering insights on nature-based solutions for farmers and ranchers facing biodiversity loss and water challenges.
Local landowners will share real-life stories of working with organizations such as Ducks Unlimited to protect and enhance their properties. Strathcona County Councillor Glen Lawrence will speak about the County’s environmental efforts and hear residents’ concerns about the state of the watershed.
To make the event family-friendly, the Strathcona County Library Bookmobile will provide kids’ activities, and a free BBQ will be served at noon.
With Alberta facing historic drought conditions and increasing water issues, organizers hope the event empowers landowners to act.
Admission is free and open to all. For landowners wondering how to make a difference, May 10 may be the day to start.
