ATV Fire Sparks 400-Hectare Wildfire in Redwater Recreation Area

A wildfire in the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area, now 70 per cent contained, has been traced to a malfunctioning all-terrain vehicle, Sturgeon County officials confirmed Tuesday.

The ATV caught fire in a remote section of the park, likely due to an electrical or mechanical issue. The blaze has since expanded to approximately 400 hectares (988 acres), with a small overnight flare-up near the river adding to suppression challenges.

No homes or buildings are currently threatened, but shifting winds expected through Wednesday are keeping crews on high alert. Ground and air teams, supported by three helicopters, heavy equipment, and the provincial wildfire branch, are working to keep the fire contained.

The impacted area stretches from Range Road 205 to Victoria Trail and between Township Road 574 and Range Roads 203 and 205. An evacuation alert remains in effect for areas south of Township Road 580 and east of Range Road 212 to the North Saskatchewan River.

Officials urge residents to stay away and prepare for evacuation if conditions worsen. Locals should have a 72-hour emergency kit and be ready to follow door-to-door instructions and designated evacuation routes.
