A residential area in northeast Edmonton is under temporary evacuation as police prepare to clear hazardous materials and potential explosives from a home near 50 Street and 131 Avenue.
The operation, led by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) in partnership with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS), is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7, 2025. It follows a welfare check on April 26 that revealed a cache of unknown chemicals and substances, as well as items police say are precursors to explosive materials.
Police initially discovered the items in plain view during their investigation. Since then, the property has been secured and held as a crime scene. Authorities say there is no immediate threat to public safety as long as the materials remain undisturbed, but the risk demands careful removal.
To ensure the safety of nearby residents during the clearing process, those living along parts of Habitat Crescent NW are being asked to evacuate their homes by 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. The duration of the evacuation is currently unknown, but residents have been advised to prepare to be away for several days.
The City of Edmonton’s Emergency Operations Centre, with assistance from the Red Cross, will provide temporary housing, food, and transportation for those without alternate accommodations. Some homes may also experience temporary natural gas shutoffs during the operation.
Road closures will be in effect, with access restricted to essential traffic. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
